A Lazy Girl's Guide to Simple Skincare
Featured Image by Angela Zhong

We all love our skincare routines until we don’t. When life gets in the way and you can’t be bothered to go through 10+ steps of skincare (much less wash your face), what’s a lazy girl to do? Here’s a simple 4-step skincare routine that you can do and get out of the way so you can resume binging your next fave Netflix show.

Girl, wash your face!

I know it’s tempting to sleep in without removing your makeup, but at least wash your face before hitting the covers! Washing your face at least once daily is crucial to healthy skin, but it’s also important to use a cleanser that’s right for you. A great cleanser shouldn’t strip your face and leave it feeling tight or stiff! Instead, it helps leave your skin clean while setting the tone for the next steps in your skincare routine. On the days when I’m too lazy to bother with double cleansing, I use CeraVe Hydrating Cream-to-Foam Cleanser. Not only does this cleanser get you comfortably clean but it’s great at taking makeup off too! I absolutely love that it’s affordable and it has great ingredients to protect your skin barrier like ceramides and hyaluronic acid. It’s also super gentle, so it’s great for all skin types. However, nothing beats a cleansing oil or balm to thoroughly take your makeup off.

Treat yo’ self

After cleansing, the next step is to apply a treatment. This step is optional but a treatment step is great if you have acne. Pick a treatment based on your main skin concern. This step is usually in the form of serums but topical creams or toners can do the work depending on the ingredients. If you’re worried about acne, look for active ingredients such as salicylic acid, chemical exfoliants, or benzoyl peroxide that are available over the counter. If you are looking to protect and brighten your skin, try vitamin C. A serum with niacinamide is also great for minimizing pores, controlling excess sebum and treating hyperpigmentation. You definitely can’t go wrong with niacinamide since it’s the MVP of active ingredients.

Here are some treatments:

Don’t forget to moisturize

Putting on moisturizer is my favorite part of my skincare routine. There is something so comforting about massaging a creamy moisturizer into the skin. It’s like a hug for your face! Growing up, my favorite moisturizer was the Aveeno Positively Radiant moisturizer. This light whipped formula has a special way of melting into your skin and it left me glow-y. Moisturizing is so important because it’s sealing in all the good ingredients you have just put in while hydrating your face. I know it’s tempting to say, “I’m oily so I don’t need to moisturize.” But your skin always needs hydrating and your natural oils aren’t going to give that same hydration. Trust me, I understand the uncomfortable feeling of being greasy. If that’s the case for you, I would suggest going for an oil-free option. Need an example? My current fave is Glow Recipe’s Watermelon Glow Pink Juice Moisturizer.

Why not give these a try?

SPF is your new BFF

Okay, I know this is a lazy skincare guide but you can’t forget SPF! Sunscreen is not just for beach days or days when you know you’re going to be out in the sun. You need to apply and reapply sunscreen every day. Sunscreen protects you from harmful UVA and UVB rays that cause hyperpigmentation and aging. Not to mention it also protects you against skin cancer. If you aren’t applying sunscreen daily, all the previous skincare steps are for nothing.

It took me a while to get better at wearing my sunscreen every day, and now I’ve come to the extent where I could feel the sun baking my face if I don’t apply any. If you find it difficult to apply sunscreen on the daily, find a sunscreen you enjoy applying. For me, that perfect sunscreen was the COSRX Aloe Soothing Sun Cream. It has a creamy texture that works into the skin nicely without greasiness or tackiness. The best part is that it has no white cast which is great for people like me with a medium to dark skin tone. And since the packaging is compact, I always keep one in my purse to reapply on the go.
